I have a very diverse clientele. So, I am fortunate to work with people of all walks of life including actors, muscians, homemakers, students, etc. Thus allowing me to be creative on different levels. This particular cut was about achieving a look that has versatility. Being an actor, he needed to be able to work with his hair texture for auditions and still have a life and just be himself. Working with his face shape, hair texture and the razor, I was able to create a cut that was not only easy to manage, but had the flexibility to be air dried, blow dried or flat ironed; still leaving an edge of masculinity.

Hello Antonio,
I enjoy your perspective about technique and art within our industry.
I am needing some insight from someone who has been in the profession. I have been a hair dresser part time for about 10 years. I have never worked in a large salon, but have been working alone and have educated myself through classes and message boards, and experience of course. I am 38 and want to know more and more. I have lots of video, dvd, books etc... I just feel like I need more. I guess I feel like I could and should be so much better. Dont get me wrong, I am a good hair dresser, but I want to be better.
Suggestions please.
Thanks for your time.

Hi Cindy,

Thank you so much, and I am happy you enjoy my blog. This is really exciting for me, and I look forward to sharing so much more in the future. Great question and smart thinking! It’s so important to be sure of yourself and talent, but as you know that’s the easy part. The hard part is being able to look in at your role in this profession (and at your creative level) and be honest with your weak areas and fixing them while
keeping up the good work.

I have a few questions. First of all, where are you located? Do you do both cut and color?
Do you have hopes of working in a bigger salon? And, where did you get your
education?
I would first recommend that you attend a 1 week cutting seminar or color with Vidal Sassoon. I do continuous education with them
since my education base was not with them. Years ago, I was advised to attend a seminar with them and it was the best thing I did for myself. It changed my world forever! Every time I return for
classes, they just get better and better.

It seems that you may be a very visual person, and I feel that this is a gift from above. Everything fell in place like magic in my career. I see stylists that need numbers (degrees) and intense structure to complete a cut. Don’t get me wrong, this is important, but at the end of the day you still need to like what you see! It’s crucial to step
out of that box to deliver believable hair styles that are going to grow out well; styles that are sexy and still feel like hair! Not hair that’s over analyzed to death or looks for lack of better words, boring, lifeless and unrealistic to the
client’s style and vibe.

Hair shows are great. I always enjoy Paul Mitchell when I do have the opportunity to attend. Make sure you talk to your sales rep to see if there is anymore info she can share with you.
When you get a chance, make sure you answer my questions? This will be really helpful and will give me great insight to offer more help.

Antonio
