MY FAVORITE DRUG STORE FINDS: GARNIER FRUCTIS SMOOTHING MILK

First of all, YES, there is a BIG difference between your salon product and a drug store find that is not a top of the line product. Professional products focus on stronger qualities like high grade silocones, proteins, light weight volumizing agents, water-based conditioners, mild detergents... the list is endless. It's known that the drug store finds cannot live up to these standards, but my finds can meet us half way.

It's my mission, purchase, try and report to you how I feel about these products.

My first purchase from this line, was the Smoothing Milk, which I found to be light weight and it got the job done. I was able to break down the curl quickly and achieve a smoothness that I was looking for. The shine was not as intense as the products that I normally work with and it took a ittle longer to dry ; however, we will give the Smoothing Milk a passing grade.

PATH FOR LIFE- "FOOD, NURTURE & CANCER"

Living with cancer sounds challenging, doesn't it? It is. Life changes
when you are diagnosed. All of a sudden everything we do has to be planned
around treatments and so on. We become patients and we are no longer
just people. For a period of time. Then treatment is over. What then?
We are faced with a new challenge. What will I do from here on about
prevention?

The first issue that I always talk about is sugar. Many have heard
"sugar feeds cancer cells", but few understand what that really means
and tend to be confused about how to then have sweetness as part of
the daily nourishment.

Yes, sugar is a culprit. Simple because it kills the natural survivial
and killer instict of our healthy cells in such a way that cancer
can indeed grow. When we eat refined sugar, we not only deplete our
immune system with every bite, we also cause our cells to feed off the
wrong "information". Food is information to our entire cell system.

So we need to choose a food plan that is low in glycemic index. That
means we need food that is rich in fiber and not processed. We need
food that is whole and cooked fresh. Not cooked in a factory and
packaged to be left on a shelf for who knows how long.

Food is the closest we have to being mothered. All illness is
considered a message to us about food and lifestyle choices that do
not work. Especially when breast cancer is involved there is message
of needing mothering. Did that surprise you? If you have been
diagnosed with breast cancer you might already have made that
connection. Most of my breast cancer clients have, but don't know what
to do with it. For a starters, cook. The most mothering we can do for
ourselves is to take really, really good care of ourselves. Show yourself
lots of love and cooking your own food is a wonderful step to take.

HAIR MISHAPS: SHE'S VEXED WITH THE RAZOR : )

Scenario ,
After being excited about the whole shorter hair craze, you are finally inspired to go short. You ask your stylist to free you from the bondage of the ponytail and are willing to commit to some extra time to styling your hair in the morning. You and your stylist are excited about the new do and your last words were, "You are in charge. I trust you. " This is a possible mishap waiting to happen...

The cut is beautiful!! It fits the shape of the face well; the style is modern and sexy.Hugs and kisses are shared and you leave the salon feeling complete; happy to be rid of the ponytail. Two days later you wash your hair and begin styling, but something has changed?! You put your brush to your hair and it's as if they had a love affair gone wrong! The hair just slides out of the brush. It's wispy and difficult to style. You start thinking about the salon visit and how happy you and your stylist were . Then the 1 thing you remembered that was different was the tool that was used... a razor! Once again the razor gets a bad name.

This is a big one because the razor is my best friend, that was so generously introduced to me by Eva. Before I decide on using a razor on my clients, I always ask myself the following things:

A) What is the style to be achieved?
B) What is the clients lifestyle?
C) Is the hair thick enough ?
D) Can I achieve the style and leave the hair with a texture that is manageable?

WAS THE RAZOR THE WRONG THING TO USE?

When choosing a tool, there are a lot of things to take into consideration. For example, the hair density, texture, the client's experience with it in the past and how aggressive it's used . The razor is a silent partner in this relationship. It is a tool that is so often misused. This tool is amazing and precise when used with care.

Here are some tips on razoring that you should know and questions you can ask if you are thinking of a razor cut:

1) Share your concerns about the razor, especially if you've had bad past experiences. A hair stylist that loves their craft will listen and decide if the razor is best for you. They will let you know whether your hair can take it or not. Rather than impose what he/she wants to do to satisfy an ego.

2) Since you are a bit nervous about the "tool in question," ask if part of the hair can be cut with the razor and the other part with the scissor ( Its done all the time ).

3) Ask for new product recommendations

4) Express concerns like, "I am afraid of being too razored", "I want it to be easy to style" and "Can we alternate razor cuts and scissor cuts ?"

MEN'S HAIR & THE CHANGES: DISCUSSING THE "G" WORD

ON THE HEAD..

OK Guys , let's have a 1 on 1 here...Yes, men do have it easier when it comes to wearing their hair naturally without hair color. But, more and more men are embracing a few low lites or a ever so slight "grey blending." You have no idea how many of your friends are coloring their hair . Gone are the days when we have to look like BRUTAS from Popeye with that black mane, now we can still have that very subtle coverage and still look mature and sexy.
Products like Wella Color Touch have developed "no ammonia " low peroxide colors to make subtle change without scaring your friends . The idea is to make you look as if you are now starting to grey. This can be achieved by baliaging color in so you only cover a percentage. Sometimes we only color a section of the hair first then after 10 minutes or so blend it into the rest of the hair because the entire head greys at different times

GREY HAIR ON THE FACE

Please do not walk around looking like you have molasses dripping off of your face. You are fooling NO ONE !! Have a professional hairstylist select a color that you can purchase from the salon to match your hair color exactly or a shade lighter .

GREY HAIR ON THE CHEST

I know some guys who use hair color on there chest; applying it with a tooth brush :) That's right, you know who you are ! But you cant have a black head of hair and a silver chest. Sorry it does not work that way. The drapes must match the sofa LOL!!

I think we should stop here for now ....

AFG's Guide to NYC: DANA GALIN

Using Jewelry to Empower and Express Yourself

Just like a fabulous new hairstyle, jewelry is an empowering tool for self-expression. Not only can your jewelry tell a story about you, it can also enhance your favorite features and draw attention away from those you appreciate less. Following a few simple image guidelines, jewelry can even subtly alter the way people perceive you.

Identify Your Goals

As with any image assessment, it’s important to first know yourself. What do you want to communicate? Can you clearly articulate your fashion style? Do you want people to take you seriously or are you yearning to express your creativity? The first step in choosing your accessories is to think about the messages you want to send.

Without a doubt, the right jewelry can enhance your appearance and empower you. Following are tips to help you determine the best features, shape, lengths, proportions, scale, texture and colors for your look.

Know Your Facial Features and Shape

“Know thyself” encompasses more than distinguishing your messages. It also includes identifying your facial features and body type. Presumably you look in the mirror every day. But do you truly know your face shape (without looking)? Do you know if you have more straight lines and angles vs. curves in your face? Do you know the line direction of your face? Are they vertical, horizontal or diagonal? This is important when choosing jewelry because it dictates the size, shape, and line direction of the pieces your wear. Note there are six basic shapes (not including combinations): Oval, heart, square, rectangle/oblong, diamond, or round.

Consider Harmony and Repetition vs. Disharmony and Variance

Once you know your features, the first rule of informed jewelry selection is harmony, or repetition. When you repeat shapes, patterns, colors, textures, and scale/proportion, you create harmony in your look and enhance your features. For example, round earrings emphasize a round face, whereas square earrings de-emphasize it. One often opts to harmonize jewelry with facial and body features. However, it’s important to understand your goals before choosing repetition vs. variance.

For example, straight lines visually suggest authority while roundness and curves evoke approachability. Say you want to present yourself more powerfully and you have a round face with soft features. Rather than emphasizing your features, you may want to select accessories with straight lines, like a pair of square earrings or rectangular glasses that will add angles to your appearance and balance out your natural softness giving the impression of authority.

Conversely, when it comes to scale and proportion, you often want to choose pieces in harmony. For example, if you are a petite woman wearing a large, bold necklace, you run the risk of the “jewelry wearing you,” meaning, people will notice the jewelry before they notice you.

Find Your Balance Points

You can wear the most beautiful necklace, but if the length is wrong, it can throw off your entire look. Here are two easy ways to identify the right necklace lengths, or balance points, for you:

First Balance Point:

Measure the length of your face from hairline to chin
Let the distance fall from the bottom of your chin down to your chest. Where it ends is your first balance point, meaning how long a “long” necklace should be for you. If you want to go longer, go for it. Just double that length for the next best look
Second Balance Point:

Identify the widest part of your face. Imagine a horizontal line across your face at the widest point.
Trace a “shape” that begins from one side of the widest part, around your jawline and chin, then back up to the other side of the widest part.
Repeat the shape you have just traced (or measured with a string or chain) at your shoulder line around your neck.
Remember always to maintain the width of your face, or you will lose the shape. The bottom of that shape indicates your second balance point. This is typically the best length for shorter necklaces.

Color

Your undertone is an important factor in determining the metal color you wear most. There are three categories of skin undertones: cool, warm and neutral. According to lovetoknow.com,

A pale, rosy, ebony, or dark-red cast to skin usually indicates that you have a cool tone.
Warm, yellow, golden, and honey tones usually lend themselves to a warm undertone.
If you have a blend of both, or are more olive toned, then you have a neutral undertone to your skin.
One way to determine your skin tone is to look at the palms of your hands. Are they more reddish or do they have more yellow? Red indicates cool while yellow indicates warm. Once you determine your skin tone, you can play with different levels of intensity, e.g. deep, dark silvers and golds vs. light, bright silvers and golds. Look for the color that harmonizes with your skin the best. If you happen to be neutral, all the better, you get to wear both! And of course, you always want to consider the colors of your clothing and what makes you feel the BEST!

This is a simple overview of how to choose the right jewelry for you. ASK ANTONIO

Welcome to Hair by Antonio, a forum for you (the client of any hair stylist) to come to and feel free to ask any question, share my knowledge and a place to feel welcome to experience the world of hair from a stylist's point of view.

No topic is left behind, no problem is too big or small for us to talk about. Who am I? I am one of the thousands of hair stylists that love anything and everything to do with hair. If you say "hair", my eyes light-up! Simply put, it's my passion.

I am certainly not trying to pass myself off as a "hair messiah". I am human, and like every stylist, I can have the occasional client that is dissatisfied for whatever reason. One thing that I promise myself and my clients is to be humble, honest and open to change. With this, I ask myself, "How can I be a better stylist?"

I know I'm on a path to something great and enjoy being challenged to use my every ability to produce my best work.

So, here I am offering an honest approach to all you men and women to share your knowledge, ask any question and have the occasional laugh with me because at the end of it all, if I can't enjoy doing what I love... It's just not worth doing at all!

MEN'S HAIR: DEALING WITH THE "G" WORD

Because I received so many questions on men's hair cuts and grey hair, I would like to address these issues so that no one feels like 2 grey hairs are going to end their world!! As the man starts grying the texture changes like with a woman. So, you can't just wake-up and leave home thinking you have the same head of hair, false!!

It should be approached differently, the gradual coarseness and light frizzing becomes difficult to work with; lacking shine and control.

When cutting the hair, it is important to take texture into consideration. Depending on the hair length of wavy hair, I like using the razor. If the hair is more than an inch to 1.5 inches long, the razor helps remove length bulk, while creating movement that normally tends to "puff" when it becomes grey. Like with any tool, if put into the wrong hands, it could spell TROUBLE! So, beware of Sweeny Todd!!

On really short hair, I machines like clippers create a severe blunt finish to some hair types. Try having your hair cut with the "scissors overcomb technique". It gives a far more superior finish. The stylist can be more versatile with style by following the planes of the head and increasing blending. Try it... you will see the difference.

There are times I still use the clippers for my clients who don't like sitting for too long, just want to get out or are comfortable with the feel and look that it gives. In this case, your wish is my command!!

Product should become a big part of your routine!

Let's talk shampoo and conditioners!
As the hair changes texture and courseness, these would be very helpful. Use a moisturizing shampoo like:

Redkin- All Soft
Paul Mitchell- Tea Tree
Bumble & Bumble- Creme de Coco
Kerastase- Bain #2
Sebastian- Laminates Shampoo

Conditioners that I recommend include:

Redkin- All Soft
Paul Mitchell- The Conditioner
Bumble & Bumble- Super Rich
Kerastase- Lait Vital
Sebastian- Laminates Conditioner

As for styling, definitely without product you can make or break any great haircut. It's actually cheaper than buying a round of drinks for the boys or girls. For short hair, you have a choice of pastes, waxes or pomades. They are all very different. Talk to you stylist and find out which is the best for you. If your salon or barber shop only sells products from the 17th century, then walk into a salon and ask for help!!!

Remember guys, when styling start off with a little product... you can always add more. Emulsify product in your hands to make sure that all of it disappears. This will ensure that there are no clumps (easily mistaken for bird poo) in your hair.

Style with your fingers not the palm of your hands. This way you can be far more creative and not flatten the hair with the weight of your hands.

AFG's Guide to NYC: BS SHIRTS

While I was trying to find creative ways to wear tshirts with my suits. I stumbled upon Chris on the corner of Houston and Broadway. He has designed unique and beautiful expressions and placed them on shirts. I've decided to take the tshirts from American Apparel that I normally wear with my suits and swap them with the shirts from BS Shirts. The prints are not only modern and creative, but the colors and prints are very easy to combine with my suits of various cuts (D&G, Zenga, etc.). Please Enjoy BS Shirts.

BRIDAL HAIR PART III: TRAILS

So, you have found a hairstylist other than your own, and it's a bit nerve racking for both parties. First of all, you have never had your hair done by this person before and you have to hopefully leave your big day up to this person hoping that he/she is talented, consistant and patient . Then let's think about the poor stylist for a second...They have to be quick enough to read between the lines, listen, deliver and complete their work in 1 hour ( most of us book hourly ). Is this possible ? Yes it is! I like marking some extra time off in my schedule to allow for a long verbal consultation.

I personally prefer to only do weddings if I can do a trial. It's too important of a day to take chances. I have met some brides that have done uo to 3 trials, and yes they paid for them all! I do make exceptions :) I have done brides that I have worked with before and wanted nothing more than a blowdry for the day of their wedding.

Has every bride that I have done a trial for booked me to do their hair on their wedding day ? Not all, but I do have a flare for wedding hair. So, I do get most of the jobs. If during the trial you are not happy, you have to say something to your stylist. You are a huge component to the success or failure of your trial! Sometimes it takes a little playing around before the stylist gets it right. A confident stylist will hand you a mirror and keep you involved and an insecure stylist will have you sitting there catching flies ... then at the very end say ,"voila!" As if too much confidence is a bad thing in the hair world . Beware for the stylist with the bunch of grapes synmrome ( tiny curls on top of the head ).

"This day is the day I have been dreaming of since I was a girl! " I often hear this from many of my clients. For some women, on the other hand, it's just not that big of a deal. There is no wrong or right.
This brings me to the question, "Who are you on your wedding day, and what style or period do you wish to capture with your hair?"

A) You a little done up but still modern and fresh
B) A more organic feel
C) Totally classic
D) Glamour puss
E) Bigger the hair, the closer to God
F) Bunch of grapes (somthing for everyone )

GET THE SKINNY ON THE TAIL

So, here is the skinny on the tail... As a man, I often find myself shareing this feeling with many men. Scenario...
She enters the room looking fierce! Shoes? Hot!!! Dressed to kill!!! Makeup? Flawless !!!!! Then with a Jackie Chan drop kick, it hit me, a some what greasy ponytail, all pinned up and in place...

How do you decide when a messy ponytail is appropriate ?
If you are going to the neighborhood supermarket at 2pm on a Tuesday when nothing is happening.. then maybe you can get away with it. AT NO OTHER TIME IS THIS APPROPRIATE!!

The test is getting a hand mirror and have a look at what we all see close up , it maybe:
A) lop-sided tail ,
B) tons of bobby pins ( wrong color )
C) a chewed up hair band ,
D) frizzy ends .
F) Are you ready for this ? Hold on I think I need a moment ...My lips are struggling to form the words ... A butterfly clip!! The person who invented this should be reprimanded for encouraging so many innocent women to walk around with their hair "butterflied up "!

Seriously :)
So, is the Ponytail a curse or a cure ?
From what I am seeing on the streets , 85% curse 15% cure. Can the citizens on this precious land get together and do something to stop this? Well here are some helpful hints;

ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT YOUR HAIR IS PROPERLY BLOWN OUT (SHAMPOOED, CONDITIONED & DRIED) USING THE PROPER PRODUCT FOR YOUR HAIR TEXTURE. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP TO ENSURE THAT YOU WON'T COMMITT THE 2-DAY OLD HAIR THROWN UP INTO A PONYTAIL OFFENSE THAT WILL BE QUICKLY RECONGIZED AS A MISHAP!

BE SURE TO BUY HAIRBANDS COVERED IN FABRIC, NOT RUBBER OR MATELLIC BANDS THAT DESTROY THE HAIR.

INVEST IN A HAND MIRROR. THIS WAY YOU ARE ABLE TO CHECK THE BACK OF YOUR HAIR IN A LARGER MIRROR.

POMADES ARE IMPORTANT IN HELPING ACHIEVE THE PERFECT PONYTAIL BY MAKING IT EASIER TO MANUVER THE HAIR. A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY.

FOR A FINAL FINISH. ONE CAN USE A FLAT IRON TO SMOOTH THE ENDS OR A LARGE CURLING IRON TO CREATE BODY.

OVERALL, IT SHOULD BE A CLEAN, POLISHED, CENTERED PONYTAIL.

SUGAR ME UP

As all my friends and clients know, I have had some minor health issues since the holidays. I'm happy to report that I am 120% better! A lot of this has to do with the reduction of sugars in my diet. Thank you so much to Path For Life! Here's my lastest nutiriton update...

Sugar Me Up.

Back in 2004 a panel was discussing if sugar should be categorized as a health hazard. It is now 2008 and there is still no health warning on your food! Sugar is actually disguised by multiple names so that you will have a hard time figuring out just how much you are ingesting.
Sugar CAN hurt you - in case you were still wondering!
Most researchers believe the evidence is strong enough to issue warnings on food labels about its sugar content. "The consumption of added sugars and a deficiency of nutrient intake is pretty strong," said Dr. Rachel Johnson. A study showed that people who got more than 18 percent of their calories from added sugars had "the least adequately nutritious diets," well below government recommended levels for many nutrients, compared with two other groups in the study, one of which consumed less than 10 percent of calories from added sugars, the other 10 to 18 percent.

Still, those words are in the fine print, which usually doesn't reach the public. The other parties lobby away: The Sugar Association, the Soft Drink Association and the National Food Processors Association are hoping it stays in the fine print. "We think there is too much emphasis on sugars. Sugars are just a part of the diet. There is no negative health impact for sugar; there never has been," they say.

Pleeeaaaasssseeee. we now know why it is not getting any better. People are not reading the lables! You have to take matters into your own hands and READ THE LABELS.

THIS IS WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON LABELS:

1. The content on labels is listed in the order of how much is in it; from greatest to least.

2. Sugar will be mentioned some times up to 5 times on a label under different names.

3. These are at least 25 names for "sugars" and sweeteners. Some examples. Brown sugar for example is just glorified white sugar, basically it is brown because caramel coloring is added. Corn syrup and High Fructose Corn Syrup are the most harmful. Artificial sweeteners are not a good idea to substitute as they are highly toxic for the body.

What is understood as cane sugar can be called any of these names beyond white or brown sugar. Turbinado, molasses, karo syrup, sorghum, “sucanat”, splenda, evaporated cane juice, or any sugar cane or sugar beet product. High Fructose Corn Syrup is also made from sugar beet sucrose, and is a sugar.

The following are not considered "sugar" and are better choices: honey, pure maple sugar or syrup, barley malt, or rice syrup. A pure fructose is a natural fruit sugar and can be used with fruit foods or you may try date sugar. Pure fructose is from fruit and dextrose is from potato.

Maltodextrin can be derived from any starch. In the US, this starch is usually rice, corn or potato; elsewhere, such as in Europe, it is commonly wheat. This is important for celiacs, since the wheat-derived maltodextrin can contains gluten.

DO NOT USE ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS, SUCH AS SACCHARINE OR NUTRA-SWEET. Saccharine has been proven in studies to be a cancer-causing agent. Nutra-sweet, also know as Equal or Aspartame breaks down into wood alcohol in the body, causing nerve damage and degeneration.

What I always suggest is - get your sweetness in life from all the wonderful people and events you have in your life, eat good quality naturally sweet foods such as carrots, beets, and wholegrain. You are much sweeter and healthier already. That is the best way to sugar you up.

Enjoy and best of health,

Jeanette

AFG's Guide to NYC: RAFFAELA e PAOLA

A few months ago we featured the store Raffaele e Paola as one of my great finds of the city. I wanted to bring it back to showcase a few of the store's fabulous items. Below is a leather corset belt by Paul Seville. This stunning hand-crafted corset gives the perfect hourglass figure.

The men’s hat by Marzi is also a hand-crafted piece from Florence, Italy.

Thanks Abby, for giving us quality clothing in Chelsea!
