Movie watch on Comesse

I'm very excited about the upcoming release of the movie The life of Pi.

On vacation in Hawaii (Kauai) a friend recommended that I read it.  It was excellent!

The book follows the journey of a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger. The way the author describes his spiritual yet horrific journey, hooks you from the very beginning.
This story is a one of a kind, with it's magical moments. I can't wait to see what the movie is like. And from the trailer, I can see it's going to be good!!! And guess who else loved it!!!

My daughter and I just finished reading Life of Pi together. Both of us agreed we prefer the story with animals.

It is a lovely book -- an elegant proof of God, and the power of storytelling.

Thank you.

My search for a Yoga teacher in New York.

After being back in New York for a month I am already feeling the stress of the city that never sleeps. As I plan to quickly regain my hold on healthy eating and exercise as I did in Miami,   I am in search of the best yoga NYC has to offer.
(yours truly practicing)

I am looking for a yoga instructor, but here's the hard part. When I lived in South beach Miami and was going through some very big emotional changes, I met a man named Jaya Dev. Jaya was not just an instructor. He was a personal mentor with a love for his practice and spirituality.

Practicing Bhakti yoga with Jaya helped me overcome some great challenges, and when you look at him practice its simply beautiful and inspirational.

Sometimes I would meet him at 5:30 am and we'd practice. Walking home afterwards as the sun came alive was a magical experience!!

Another wonderful thing about practicing with Jaya (apart from the live music and chanting) is his food. The man cooks a fabulous vegetarian meal after each class. After we were all done with practice, we would gather together like a family and enjoy this food that was obviously prepared with love.

So the hard part is finding a place to practice that's similar in NYC that can give me the guidance that I need, in a humble environment that's full of love. Does this exist NYC?

To reach Jaya in South beach Miami call him at 917 294 4803 and he will let you know where you can find him.

Namaste.

Straight frizzy hair.

When we talk about frizzy hair it seems like curly hair folks get all the attention. Well I am here to speak up for all my friends with straight hair who have been cursed with the "F word"...Frizz.

Yes folks, it seems like curly hair has a friend (or foe) in straight hair.

If you're that straight-haired person I'm referring to, here are some solutions to help you have a summer filled with beautiful-hair days! For shampoos, I recommend using Phytolisse Shampoo by Phyto haircare. It contains botanicals that will hydrate and smooth hair without leaving it limp. And if you blow dry your hair, this shampoo provides heat protection as an added bonus.
For a daily conditioner, I recommend Moisture Repair Conditioner by Morocconoil. It's light-weight, fights frizz without being too oily and smells heavenly.  Now when you use these two products with hydrating benefits, be careful to not over-use it so your scalp gets too oily.
When styling, either air-dry or blow dry, I highly recommend Boost by Orlando Pita!! Buy it fast because it's been discontinued so you better stock up. Although it has revolutionary heat-seeking nanotechnology, I love using it to air-dry hair as well. It's one of those situations when as a hairstylist I change the rules a little. It also tames fly-aways, fights frizz and mends split ends. Gotta love that! You want to have frizz-free hair that has movement and shines, not hair that sticks to your head leaving you looking like you were swimming in lard...
When blow drying hair, stay away from aggravating the cuticle with round brushes. I use the Mason Pearson hair brush. I've always said it's a brush that makes love to the hair. Round brushes are great but in this case if you want to keep it simple and straight, the Mason Pearson is your best friend...(and she ain't cheap!)

I hope these products bring you some relief from summer frizzing... as straight hair folks need some loving too!

HELP FOR DRY HAIR.

Dry hair has become an annoying part of everyday life for most of us. Maybe it's because of one too many hair color treatments, Keratin treatments or (in my case) too much salt and sun.
So how can we add hydration back into our hair?
Today I decided to test a treatment on my own hair using a new product from Kerastase called Chronologiste. With its sexy black packaging, this treatment comes as a set. The Caviar beads conveniently come in a pump which is then mixed with a rich, soothing conditioning cream.
This quality treatment is designed to hydrate hair, bringing it back to life.

Like any hair product, it's not for everyone. I have a lot of hair but its fine. It's also curly and lacks moisture, but luckily it's not too frizzy. So although my hair is fine, I like it to feel glossy and hydrated, in other words I am not afraid of conditioner. I love this product because it leaves my hair feeling great, looking fabulous and the shine is intense.
Keep in mind I only do this treatment every 2 weeks (or a little less). In between I generally condition my hair with Lait Nutrisculpt by Kerastase. For you gents and ladies with thick, frizzy dry hair, this is the product for you. It will help your hair regain its luster and shine.
And with the dog days of summer ahead of us....who doesn't want to have healthy, frizz-free hair these days?

Love your hair baby!

NEW YORKS BEST PASTEL HAIR BY JENNIFER GANDIA FOR ORLO SALON.

My co-worker/colorist Jennifer is simply amazing at creating beautiful pastel hair color. This color is so beautiful I just had to share it. Jen says the model had virgin hair when she came in to the salon, it took about 4 hours to create this beautiful flawless color.

What I love about Jennifer is her attention to detail. We both do color (baliage, foils, etc) Jennifer's work is inspirational!

Thanks babe!!

INOA IN NYC

I am happy to report since the Inoa hair color has been relaunched it is still living up to expectations! Today in New York a client said that its the longest her hair color has ever lasted, and she has been coloring her hair for a long time. She always complained of not getting great coverage from other professional hair colors.

Now keep in mind that if you are happy with your hair color please don't go running to change brands, it may not be for you. Unless you have specific needs like poor gray coverage and you're looking for a color with less ammonia. I can not say Inoa is the "best hair color' I ever used, but it is good.

I will continue to post feedback.

Thanks Inoa!

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR IN THE HAIR SALON

When we go to the hair salon, there are certain things that are expected like receiving a great haircut or great customer service. What we do not deserve is someone exhibiting inappropriate behavior in the salon. No one really wants to talk about this, but of course here on Comessenyc, we can discuss anything and everything about the salon experience. So ladies and gents, here are all the things that you should not do in a hair salon.

“Oh, what about you hairstylists!” you ask. “Shouldn’t you check yourselves, too?”

Don’t worry, child. You know I'm going to cover it all!

Clients talking on cell phones-
Only if President Obama is calling should you answer. We all have emergencies, so exceptions must be made. But do you really need to talk on the phone when getting your hair washed? I don't think so.

Consistently late for appointments-
You know who you are. We all do too. Showing up late affects the appointment of the next clients throughout the day. If you are half an hour late when its’ a busy day for the hairstylist, you should be encouraged to come another day. This way you also get your full service (and so does everyone else).

Always asking for a discount-
Do you ask your doctor for a discount? Or how about your dentist? This is not the flea market. However, when close clients started loosing their jobs because of the recession it was normal for me to give clients a break in price. We are a family after all!

Calling four weeks later to say your color is not right-
Four weeks is a very long time. If your color is not to your liking, you should notice something in the first week. I believe two weeks is more than enough time for you to notice if the coverage was not to your liking or if unwanted color tones are present. As soon as you notice, call the salon and most professionals will be willing to correct your hair color if necessary.

Keep in mind if you wanted a single process and feel you want some lighter pieces, that's a separate process at a separate cost.

Dogs in the salon-
When I last checked there were no laws against dogs in salons. If your dog is well behaved, big or small, it should not be a problem. Please keep in mind the size of the salon may not accommodate a big dog and it may be difficult for stylists and clients to move around freely.

Now it's the stylists’ turn to face the music.

Always late-
If a stylist is always late, chances are they did not get to work on time. This is a sign of unprofessionalism. It may also be that the stylist is overbooked. Honestly, the client should not have to suffer in order for the stylist to make more money.

Juggling too many clients-
This is coming from someone who for years did 3 clients at a time, having assistants finish my work. Today, I understand the value of my doing all the work myself. It's mostly beneficial to the client, giving them their money’s worth and a quality of work that no assistant can give. This type of service is an advantage to the stylist and a disadvantage to the client.

A hairstylist that gets upset when their client tries to see another hairstylist-
A client is allowed to go to anyone they wish to. Sometimes we the stylists get stuck in ruts and the client wants something new or a new pair of ears to talk to. It could even be that the client may have seen another stylist’s work and wants some of what he or she has to offer. But whatever the case, the moral of the story is, let's celebrate the client’s wants.

The “diva” hairstylist-
If you are considered the diva of the salon, it generally is not a compliment – it’s a sign of insecurity. Who else would walk around the salon making demands, bullying assistants and clients, and expressing major entitlement? Only the diva hairstylist.

Hairstylists talking too much-
How annoying is it to have a hairstylist that only talks about him or herself? I once heard a client say to a hairstylist, that she was having a bad day because of a sick loved one. Then to hear the hairstylist respond by saying "Oh my God, I saw a great movie recently!" Really? Loud-mouthed stylists (and you know who you are), learn when to keep your mouths shut and listen once in a while!

This is a short look at the areas in which we as clients and hairstylists can improve. At the end of the day, we should all be able to smile and laugh at ourselves a bit as we decide to improve our salon etiquette for next time. ;)

HAIR ON THE STREETS OF MANHATTAN.

Walking through Union Square today I could not help but notice this beauty and her hair. Intrigued by her individuality I just had to ask, what products do you use in your hair? She looked at me, smiled and said I use absolutely nothing!

This is why I moved back to NYC!!
