Gabby Douglas- We love you

Here are the facts about Gabby- She is the first African-American (and American) to win gold in both all-around and team finals.

Gabby is also an excellent example for boys and girls around the world, showing that dreams do come true.

Too bad so many social media outlets focused on something else. It's a pity that young beautiful girls are being harassed into believing its their appearance that matters most. Girls as young at 10 are already getting regular blowouts to straighten their curly or wavy hair, because they are told it "looks better".

The excitement around girls when their hair is straight is overwhelming, leaving the child believing that to be liked, her hair has to be straight.

Girls as young as 10 are already getting manicures and pedicures on a regular basis. Some are even getting highlights.

As a hairstylist who loves helping women look and feel great, I can safely say that a hairstyle only lasts awhile. Inner beauty lasts forever.

With the media and press constantly sending a very narrow definition of the perfect looking woman, no wonder our young women are being misguided.

Young girls need to understand that individuality is a woman's strongest asset.

Oh and hairdressers, one more thing. Stop telling young women that layers and low-lights will make them look thinner and that straight hair is better.

Is that the best we can do??

Embrace your true beauty…we love you Gabby!!  Your determination and hard work has warmed our hearts!
